5 Tips in Creating a Mess-Free Garage

When we say garage, we usually think of storage boxes, shelving units, endless piles of stashed away items, and a little and just enough space for your car to fit. This part of the house should not be limited to being a storage space, with a little bit of renovating and tips on keeping it clutter-free, you’ll be surprised with how much space you can still use.

  1. The easiest but is a time-consuming task: Decluttering.
No great thing ever comes easy, and in creating a mess-free garage, the first thing to do is to get rid of the mess itself. Take out all the boxes that have piled up place all the items in a pile. Start decluttering and organize them into separate boxes. Set Up a garage sale while you’re at it and sell the things you will not be using anymore. This way, you are hitting two birds in one stone- You’re cleaning, and earning at the same time.
  1. Create or install built-in full height cabinetry.
In most cases, we tend to gravitate towards buying assembly shelving units instead of installing storage. These shelving units give you a reason to just pile things up again and is actually an eye sore when left unorganized. Create the illusion of having little mess by installing cabinets with doors and drawers, this way all the mess is hidden and is not in plain sight. A full-height storage also gives more storage space as you are utilizing more of the space that you're working with.
  1. Organize your storage.
Now that you have the cabinets installed you may be tempted to just shove things in and leave them as is, but in the long run you will again run out of storage space. The chances of this happening is lesser when you organise items by use. For example, store extra toiletries in one cabinet door, and toys on another. Keep the tools on doors with locks so that your kids will not have access to them. In simple organization, you are able to maximize the storage space.
  1. Choose an easy-to-clean floor surface.
Plain concrete surfaces often get stained with oil and tire tracks that are hard to clean, this may be unsightly and adds to the dirt of the garage. An epoxy flooring on the other hand seals the floor making it non-porous to spills. It is easily installed, and is durable in withstanding wear. Keep in mind that the garage will receive all the dirt from your car, and investing on the right floor finish saves you time in cleaning, which is something we all want.
  1. Establish a regular cleaning schedule.
The last tip is to simply just be a little more caring of the space. Allot at least 10 minutes a day to pick up clutter, put them back in storage, and wipe the floors. There really is no one greatest hack to keeping it mess-free, it is all in your willingness.
